In theory, keywords are the words that most
effectively define your content or subject matter. The idea is that if
your website is about van insurance, then the words 'van' and
'insurance' will occur often on that page - perhaps at a word density
of around 4%. Search engines therefore look out for those words that
occur at a typical word density of around 4% and use these words
(keywords) to define what your site is about. How they retrieve your
webpages in keyword searches entered into search engines has much to do
with this keyword density. They also pay considerable attention to any
keywords in the page title and description meta
tag. The keywords meta
tag is ignored by Google but is important for other search engines.
What this means in practice is that you need to consider the keywords
that are relavant to the pages on your site and feature them at the
appropriate density in terms of word count.
The practical 'do's and 'don't's of this are presented in our ebook Successful Affiliates Guide.
Keywords are what internet marketers compete for in terms of search
rank. What you do off-site to improve search rank for your important
keywords is even more important than what you do with your website.
Both activities require careful search engine
optimization (SEO). The
essence of SEO relates to getting your keywords right on your website
and directing high quality links into your site from other websites.
How to do this in practice requires significant work. If you want to
know more about it, it is fully covered in the ebook.
If you have the budget for it, SEO companies can assist. Take
referrences first. There are a lot of SEO companies that do not deliver.
