A landing page is the page on
your site
where an external link is directed. It can be helpful when creating
link campaigns to have unique landing pages so that when you check your
webmaster analytics,
you can see how much traffic is coming from different
sources.
For example, there are numerous
'directory' websites where you can list your website. Such sites
typically offer free listings but you can improve your rank via pay per click (ppc).
Some of them will preserve your URL (your webpage address)
in the link they provide to your site. Most do not. The latter
typically redirect to your site via a 'jump' php script on their own
site. In the latter case, you can use a unique landing page for each of
these directories. This will help you to determine which link campaigns
are working. If you are receiving few if any traffic from one of these
sources, you may consider increasing your ppc budget for that site. You
may also wish to tailor the content of such landing pages.
While you can also use landing pages where your URL is preserved in
their link, the more important role of such links is to improve your
search rank and so it should be directed to your homepage or an
alternative page that you wish to be highly ranked by search engines.
