Search Engine Optimization involves a range
of actvities all intended to improve search rank on leading search
engines (mainly Google) for important and relevant keyword searches.
If you sell, for example, motorbike insurance you will want to rank
highly for related keyword searches, the most important ones being
'motorbike insurance', 'bike insurance' and 'motorcycle insurance'.
What you do to achieve this is known as search engine optimization -
SEO.
Broadly, there are two aspects to SEO. What is done on your website and
what is done elsewhere on the net. The latter is more important at
present but the former must also be done well for the latter to work
effectively. The search engine algorythm landscape appears to be
gradually changing, however, towards site content being increasingly
more important.
The new Cuil search engine
(pronounced 'cool') - once it gets its (algorythmic) act together
to provide genuinely useful results - uses only site content to
determine search rank. Inbound links (backlinks) are irrelevant. If
this search engine takes off, websites will have to be about having to
be useful rather than being clever at SEO. Isn't that refreshing?
For now 'though, you need to get Search Engine Optimization right.
