RSS refers to Really Simple Syndication
although when first developed it referred to Rich Site Summary. An RSS
document, with the .xml extension, is known as a feed, or web feed. It
is used for frequently updated content such as a blog or news feed. It
includes full or summarised text, links to the original HTML documents
and specifies the dates when these documents were published.
RSS allows you to automatically syndicate your content and those
wishing to follow your news or blog can suscribe to your feed (via an
RSS aggregator - available free online) to get automatic updates.
It is a good idea to offer an RSS news or blog feed on your site which
you can submit to leading RSS Indexes as listed at eg. MasterNewMedia.org.
This increases the exposure and reach of your website.
To let search engines know about your RSS feed and to make your feed
recognisable to browsers, you need to include the following - altered
for your requirements - in your page head of every page that contains a
link to an RSS feed:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml"
title="Latest News and Views from the Van Insurance Experts"
href="http://www.yoursitename.com/vaninsurancenews.xml">
The title describes the feed and the href designates the feed URL.
